Adamawa Government Distributes 5,000 Tonnes Of Fertilizers To Farmers

In a bid to help mitigate the impact of Covid 19 on small holder farmers, the Adamawa State Government says it has procured 5,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser for distribution to farmers, to encourage productivity.

Dr Dishi Khobe, the state’s Commissioner of Agriculture, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of  Nigeria (NAN), in Yola on Monday.

Khobe disclosed that the fertiliser would be sold at N5,000 per bag, to enhance farmer access to the commodity and encourage productivity.

He noted said that the fertiliser procured by the state government was to assist smallholder farmer to succeed and achieve bumper harvest.

“That is why the price of a bag of fertiliser is N5,000 as against N10,000 in the market,’’ he said.

Khobe added that the state government adopted proactive procurement measures to guard against diversion of the commodity and ensure that genuine farmers benefited from the gesture.

He advised farmers to ensure proper application of fertiliser and other inputs to enable them record higher yields at harvest.

The Commissioner further warned farmers against sale of the commodity, adding that it could be preserve for dry season activities.

“Keep it and you will enjoy it during dry season farming but if you sell it now when the dry season comes you must buy it at exorbitant prices in the market,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the commodity would be distributed to about 500, 000 farmers registered by 20 farmer cooperative societies in the state.
